Simple Models of Discrete Choice and Their Performance in Bandit Experiments

چکیده
Recent operations management papers model customers as solving multi-armed bandit problems, positing that consumers use a particular heuristic when choosing among suppliers. These papers then analyze the resulting competition among suppliers and mathematically characterize the equilibrium actions. There remains a question, however, as to whether the original customer models upon which the analyses are built are reasonable representations of actual consumer choice. In this paper, we empirically investigate how well these choice rules match actual performance as people solve two-armed Bernoulli bandit problems. We find that some of the most analytically tractable models perform best in tests of model fit. We also find that the expected number of consecutive trials of a given supplier is increasing in its expected quality level, with increasing differences, a result that is consistent with the models’ predictions, as well as with loyalty effects described in the popular management literature.

متن کاملModeling Human Performance in Restless Bandits with Particle Filters
Bandit problems provide an interesting and widely-used setting for the study of sequential decision-making. In their most basic form, bandit problems require people to choose repeatedly between a small number of alternatives, each of which has an unknown rate of providing reward. We investigate restless bandit problems, where the distributions of reward rates for the alternatives change over ti...
متن کاملLearning and animal behavior: exploring the dynamics of simple models
Introduction All living organisms must interact with an external environment and should respond to it in a way that maximizes their probability of reproduction and survival. If an organism can learn, it will be able modify its behavior based on environmental feedback and potentially increase its survival probability. The processes underlying learning and behavior are of interest to researchers ...
متن کاملProbit and nested logit models based on fuzzy measure
Inspired by the interactive discrete choice logit models [Aggarwal, 2019], this paper presents the advanced families of discrete choice models, such as nested logit, mixed logit, and probit models to consider the interaction among the attributes. Besides the DM's attitudinal character is also taken into consideration in the computation of choice probabilities. The proposed choice models make us...
متن کاملModeling and Evaluation of Stochastic Discrete-Event Systems with RayLang Formalism
In recent years, formal methods have been used as an important tool for performance evaluation and verification of a wide range of systems. In the view points of engineers and practitioners, however, there are still some major difficulties in using formal methods. In this paper, we introduce a new formal modeling language to fill the gaps between object-oriented programming languages (OOPLs) us...
